    Put effort into

Zoe says that if you don't have much time to exercise, it's ok to do shorter sessions as long as you push yourself - try harder and put more effort into what you're doing.

조이는 운동할 시간이 많지 않다면 더 열심히 노력하고 운동에 더 많은 노력을 기울인다면 더 짧게 해도 괜찮다고 말합니다.

[V] push oneself to 동사원형 / push oneself into 명사 : oneself를 ~하도록 밀어붙이다

    [Example]
    - I pushed myself to get fit for this summer
    - I've pushed myself hard to get this far
    - I pushed myself into working harder
    - We pushed outselves even harder to make it work

    - Looks like you put lots of effort into it

If you can swim a length in forty seconds, push yourself to swim it in thirty-five. That means exercising harder of course, but for a shorter time.

한 거리를 40초 안에 수영할 수 있다면 35초 안에 수영할 수 있도록 자신을 몰아붙이세요.

    02.
    Trade-off

In other words, there's a trade-off - you accept the disadvantages of something in order to get the benefit it brings.

즉, 어떤 이점을 얻기 위해 어떤 것의 단점을 감수하는 절충안이 존재한다는 뜻입니다.

[V/N] trade off (동사) / trade-off (명사) : trade-off는 하나를 선택하면, 하나를 잃게 되는 '상충관계'일 때를 뜻한다.

    [Example]
There's certainly trade-offs between working from home and working in an office.
    There's some trade-offs (장단점이 있어)

    03.
    Sedentary

Another problem for many people is that their job is sedentary - it involves little exercise or physical activity.

많은 사람이 겪는 또 다른 문제는 운동이나 신체 활동이 거의 없는 앉아서 일하는 직업이라는 점입니다.

Zoe thinks it's important that office workers who sit down all day also find time to exercise. Here she shares her tips with BBC Radio 4 programme, Inside Health.

조이는 하루 종일 앉아서 일하는 직장인들도 운동할 시간을 갖는 것이 중요하다고 생각합니다. 그녀는 BBC 라디오 4 프로그램인 인사이드 헬스에서 자신의 팁을 공유합니다.

    [Adj] sedentary

    [Example]
    - I have a sedentary job.
    - Do you have a sedentary table? (좌식 책상 있나요?)
[V] involve 수반하다, 포함하다(자동사), 연루시키다, 관련시키다(타동사) / involve someone in something 참여시키다.

    [Example]
    - The job involves me travelling all over the country.
    - The test will involve answering questions about a photograph.
    - There was a serious incident involving a group of youth.
    - We want to involve as many people as possible in the celebrations.

    04.
    bang for your buck

Especially people who have office jobs are sat down all day, we then look at some of the easy wins. So, active travel, and even if that's parking a little bit further away.
특히 사무직에 종사하는 사람들은 하루 종일 앉아서 일하기 때문에 쉽게 이길 수 있는 몇 가지 방법을 찾습니다. 따라서 활동적인 여행, 그리고 조금 더 먼 곳에 주차하더라도요.

One of the exciting areas in the literature that's coming out at the moment, is actually walking faster.
현재 나오는 문헌에서 흥미로운 분야 중 하나는 실제로 더 빨리 걷는 것입니다.

So, if you have no time to suddenly do 10,000 steps a day, can we get you to do 5,000 steps faster? Will we see an improvement on your health? Yes, we will see an improvement on your health, especially over a longer period of time.
갑자기 하루에 10,000보를 걸을 시간이 없다면 5,000보를 더 빨리 걸을 수 있을까요? 그러면 건강이 개선되나요? 예, 특히 장기간에 걸쳐 건강이 개선되는 것을 볼 수 있습니다.

The big foucus around short, sharp exercise sessions is you get more bang for your buck
단시간에 집중적으로 운동하면 투자 대비 더 큰 효과를 얻을 수 있습니다.

[N] active travel 신체 활동 / 신체 활동을 포함한 관광

    [Example]
    - Active travel is a key component of good health.
[V] get someone to 동사원형: someone이 ~하게 하다 (온건적인 느낌) / make someone 동사원형 (고압적인 느낌)

    [Example]
    - My mum got me to clean my room
    - I got him to quit drinking
    - I'll get her to type the report
    - I really want to make my boyfriend happy (강한 의지의 표현)
    [N] bang for your buck (들인 돈·노력보다 큰) 효과[가치]

    [Example]
    - I will help you get more bang for your buck.
    - This smartphone is not the latest, but it gives a bigger bang for your buck.

    05.
    Easy wins

Zoe's suggestions for active travel, things like walking from the car, and using the stairs instead of the lift, are easy wins - tasks that are both easy to accomplish and bring benefits.

차에서 내려 걷기, 리프트 대신 스타리스 이용하기 등 활동적인 여행을 위한 조이의 제안은 쉽게 실천할 수 있고 이득도 얻을 수 있는 쉬운 방법입니다.

Easy wins, like short but intensive bursts of exercise, increase fitness and give you more bang for your buck, and idiom which means that you get better results for the same amount of effort you put in.

짧지만 집중적인 운동과 같은 쉬운 운동은 체력을 높이고 투자 대비 더 많은 효과를 얻을 수 있으며, 같은 양의 노력으로 더 나은 결과를 얻을 수 있다는 의미의 관용구입니다.

That's something everyone can appreciate - even you, Neil.

이는 모든 사람이 인정할 수 있는 부분이며, 여러분도 마찬가지입니다.

[V/N] burst 터지다, 터뜨리다 / 불쑥 가다, 오다 / 한바탕 ~을 함, 파열

    [Example]
    - The dam burst under the weight of water.
    - He burst into the room without knocking
    - The words burst from her in an angry rush
    - I tend to work in bursts
    - Spontaneous bursts of applause

    Reveal

Well, I'll definitely try to walk more, but remember Sam, the body needs rest too!

더 많이 걷도록 노력하겠지만 샘, 몸에도 휴식이 필요하다는 걸 기억하세요!

And speaking of walking, isn't it time to reveal the answer to your question: how many steps does the UK government recommend we should walk a day?

걷기 얘기가 나와서 말인데, 영국 정부에서는 하루에 몇 보를 걸을 것을 권장하고 있나요?

I guessed it was five thousand... So, was I right?

    5,000명인 줄 알았는데... 제가 맞았나요?

You were close, Sam, but in fact the correct answer is ten thousand steps a day, although as Zoe mentioned walking fewer steps faster has benefits too.

거의 정답이었어요, 하지만 사실 정답은 하루에 만 걸음이에요. 하지만 Zoe가 언급했듯이 더 적게 빨리 걷는 것도 이점이 있습니다.

[V] reveal (비밀을) 폭로하다, 밝히다 / (보이지 않던 것을) 드러내다

    [Example]
    - Details of the murder were revealed by the local paper.
    - He laughed, revealing a line of white teeth.

      • 새해 결심은 새해에 긍정적인 일을 하겠다는 자신과의 약속입니다. 스스로를 채찍질하면 하고 있는 일에 더 많은 노력을 기울이게 됩니다.
    • In a trade-off, you accept the disadvantages of something in order to get the benefits as well. 'Trade-off' can also be used as a verb.
      • 트레이드 오프에서는 어떤 이점을 얻기 위해 단점도 감수하는 것을 말합니다. '트레이드 오프'는 동사로도 사용할 수 있습니다.

      • 그리고 쉬운 승리는 달성하기 쉬우면서도 긍정적인 결과를 가져오는 작업입니다.
    • And finally, the idiom more bang for your buck, means you get a better outcome for the same amount of effort you put into something.
      • 마지막으로, '더 큰 효과를 얻는다'는 관용구는 동일한 노력에 비해 더 나은 결과를 얻을 수 있다는 의미입니다.
